National Council on Education Black Children (NCEBC)has selected Brightwood Community Center, 2410 N. Station Street, is one of 20 Literacy Centers to be opened in Indiana.
Diane Newton (Carmel, St. Mark's) and Carol Grimes-Weeden (Lawrence UMC) are key volunteers in this new program. They are working with the many volunteers on Tuesday and Wednesday evening providing three learning centers for the kids each of these evenings.
The kids are able to use the internet software provided through NCEBC; fiction books that the kids can culturally relate are read and a writing time are available in groups by age. Homework help is provided.
