The following summer youth programs received 2011 Metro Ministries Summer Youth Program Grants:
Barnes UMC - Praise Stage Theatre Productions - The drama ministry seeks to use theatre and the non-traditional "sermon-on-the-stage" methodist of reaching out to both, churchgoers and the unchurched and to introduce the concept of drama as a means of drawing youth and adults to Christ.
Brightwood Community Center Summer Fun & Frolic - The program provides the academic enrichment and character development needed to help our youth be better students during the school year. It also provides a safe place for youth during the summer to share lunch and daily devotional fellowship.
Broadway Jubliee Roving Youth Corp - Because we live in a world that sees many of our urban communities as imoverished, we want to nurture a vision of abudnance and allow our youth to see the gifts in the people around them. In doing so, we believe the community will become stronger, families will be strengthened, and youth will increase their networks of support.
Castleton UMC Children's Ministry - This ministry extends Radical Hospitality to all children by offering a free Vacation Bible School.
Vida Nueva Ministries - Descubriendo Indy 2011 - This is a program aims to empower children, validating their many strengths and capabilities as duel language learners, and introducing them to the city in which they live in ways that may otherwise be out of reach for them.
East Tenth UM Children & Youth Summer - The Youth Center's mission is to provide a safe place where the spiritual, emotional, educational, and physical needs of children, youth, and their families are responded to in a holistic approach. The summer Days for Youth fulfills this mission by providing quality and educational care to over 100 low-income children and their families for 10.5 hours a day for 10 weeks during the summer.
Forest Manor UMC Summer Outreach - The children of their community will receive small forms economic support and a spiritual suport for the family and the community. They will provide a safe nurturing and fun learning environment for the children in the community.
Indianapolis, Interfaith Hospitality Network - The summer program is for the children that are housed at the shelter in the summer time and is intended for that group and will include educational components so that they are not a statistic. Summer time is a time in which many children "lose what they learned." According to the National Center for Homeless Education, homeless children are nine times more likely to repeat a grade; four times more likely to drop out of school; three times more likely to be placed in special education and two times more likely to scor lower on standardized tests than non-homeless children.
Lawrence UMC Kids Club - Children are served with the aim to creat an atmosphere that molds the leaders of tomorrow into a positive realm of humanity. Children first grand - seventh grade are provided a positive place for them that will stimulate their minds as well through their SWAN program (Science, Writing, Arithmetic, and Nature).
Lawrence UMC Youth Corps - The LYC youth bring transformation to themselves through their hard work and as they serve their nieghbors as they provide free work for them. They become "Christ-like" as they embody respect and responsibility for themselves, others, and the property of others.
Lawrence UMC VBS Outreach - By God's grace, Lawrence UMC is a community of faith with oppen hearts, open minds and open doors." During Vacation Bible School, the children of the community will be given a chance to experience this love in many ways through music, games, fellowship and teaching. They will also ahve the opportunity to share this love through the community service program which is selected for the summer.
Sheridan First UMC Kid's Lunch Club - forty-one per cent of the school aged children in Sheridan participate in the free or reduced cost lunch program. Sheridan First is here to fill in the gapp during those times that school is not in session. Everyone is warmly welcome with a high five...something the kids love. They take time to sit and listen and to encourage and sometimes offer spiritual guidance and referrals for other services. For the first time, they will offer opportunities for involvement and assistance through the butterfly garden, tutoring program, and the hands-on quilt project.
Smith Valley UMC Ultimate Frisbee Youth Outreach - The purpose of U.F.O. is to provide activities in a fun, safe, Christian enironment that will bring local residents onto the church grounds and hopefully into the church building. Children ages 8 and over come to play each Wednesday evening April - October.
St. Andrew UMC Circles of Life - This project is designed to highlight an established community garden with a new garden for birds and butterflies being designed. All ages are served with each group that comes to the ministry having a different program planned for their event with hands-n activity, scruiture less and character lesson. They receive a small momento of their involvement in our mission work such as a book or Native American CD.
St. Andrew UMC Tree Boys - The "Tree Boys" are young boys ages six through 12 who run in a gang due to parental abuse of drugs and alcohol. They have no resources to each from Friday-Sunday. Meals will be shared with them each Sunday this summer with connecting congregation members and community building together.
St. Andrew UMC VBS Outreach - The program teaches children how several children in the Bible affected their families and their communities and how children today can do the same. This is a model VBS written by a member of St. Andrew that can be shared with others.
Speedway Summer Child Care Ministry - The SUMC Childcare ministry has a ministry of nurturing young children. It helps them grow and deveop in a safe, high-quality chidcare setting based on a strong Christian foundation.
Wesley W.A.R. (Wesley at-Risk) Education program - The four week program is designed integrate pedagogy and faith. The program is intentntionally multicultural.
