Society of St. Andrew Potato Drop

Society of St. Andrew and Grace UMC have partnered for the last 7 years on Potato Drops. Utilizing their relationships with local farmers, Society of St. Andrew (SoSA) will partner with a potato farmer to donate, package and deliver 40,000 pounds of potatoes to Grace UMC on December 21, 2019.

Grace UMC, along with St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, will recruit and oversee 40-50 volunteers to break down and repackage the potatoes into 10 pound bags and distribute them to agencies and other churches in the community to serve those who are food insecure.  The potatoes will arrive at the church at 6:30 am and will all be distributed by that afternoon.

SoSA is a national faith-based organization whose mission is to bring people together to harvest and share healthy food, reduce food waste, and build caring communities by offering nourishment to hungry neighbors. 2018 was SoSA's first year with a regional office presence in Indiana, where they saved and distributed over 300,000 pounds of fresh produce to 170 agences with the help of over 700 volunteers.  Grace UMC is the only Central District church hosting a potato drop at this time, and we hope to see more UM churches hosting drops in the coming year!

Brookside Scholarships Awarded 2018

Members of the former Brookside United Methodist Church have provided opportunities to students that have decided to further their education to receive support through their Legacy endowment established when the church closed in 2008. The scholarship fund was established with the United Methodist Foundation of Indiana to be distributed annually by Metro Ministries to qualified candidates for a scholarship to a post-secondary school.

Felicia Renteria
Scholarship Recipient

Felicia Renteria is a sophomore at Indiana State University. This is Felicia’s second scholarship from the Brookside legacy. We met Felicia last year as an incoming freshman at Indiana State University. She is majoring in Psychology, and her goal is to own her own business as a therapist or social worker. Felicia has followed up with Lisa Morris, Metro Ministries Executive Director, during the year as she completed her freshman year at Indiana State University. Felicia expressed how blessed she was to experience the love of our church family. Following the annoucement, she shared in her recent email, “Thank you so much for the email and opportunity! I'm so thankful for you all!”

Britney Bailey
Scholarship Recipient

Britney Bailey is a 2018 graduate of Pike High School and an incoming freshman at Purdue University. She was referred to us through Outreach Inc., an east-side organization whose mission is “Equipping and empowering homeless teens and young adults to achieve stability and life transformation.” Britney’s reaction to our scholarship announcement was, “Wow, thank you all so much! This is such a blessing. I cannot express how thankful I am!”
