Greater Indy Habitat for Humanity Thrivent Faith Build

Greater Indy Habitat for Humanity will bring together Central Indiana churches to build a new home for the Opiew Ojulu and Ojulu Nyigwo family. This family attends Wesley United Methodist Church and are refugees from Ethiopia.

Greater Indy Habitat for Humanity partners with this family, with churches and with Thrivent, who is matching funds for this build, to eliminate barriers to a better, healthier and more financially stable life. As with all families who partner with Habitat, this family will actively participate in their build as well as in financial stability and budgeting training provided through Habitat's services.

Nyingew and his wife Ajulu are parents to Omot (adopted nephew, 20), Martha (18) Manamanya (17) and Ngaha (3). Nyingew's journey as a refugee began in 2003 when he fled the country after escaping prison and ultimately being accepted into the United States as a political refugee. He and his family were separated for almost 11 years before his wife and three children were able to come to the United States four years ago.

Brookside Scholarships Awarded 2018

Members of the former Brookside United Methodist Church have provided opportunities to students that have decided to further their education to receive support through their Legacy endowment established when the church closed in 2008. The scholarship fund was established with the United Methodist Foundation of Indiana to be distributed annually by Metro Ministries to qualified candidates for a scholarship to a post-secondary school.

Felicia Renteria
Scholarship Recipient

Felicia Renteria is a sophomore at Indiana State University. This is Felicia’s second scholarship from the Brookside legacy. We met Felicia last year as an incoming freshman at Indiana State University. She is majoring in Psychology, and her goal is to own her own business as a therapist or social worker. Felicia has followed up with Lisa Morris, Metro Ministries Executive Director, during the year as she completed her freshman year at Indiana State University. Felicia expressed how blessed she was to experience the love of our church family. Following the annoucement, she shared in her recent email, “Thank you so much for the email and opportunity! I'm so thankful for you all!”

Britney Bailey
Scholarship Recipient

Britney Bailey is a 2018 graduate of Pike High School and an incoming freshman at Purdue University. She was referred to us through Outreach Inc., an east-side organization whose mission is “Equipping and empowering homeless teens and young adults to achieve stability and life transformation.” Britney’s reaction to our scholarship announcement was, “Wow, thank you all so much! This is such a blessing. I cannot express how thankful I am!”
